NotMyAverage Stadium
Less than a year into Grasshopper, a belgian office received the mission to building the facade of a very known stadium from ZHA. After contacting my University, I was chosen to work with them and evaluate the possibility of using Grasshopper.
Although, the collaboration ended up prematurely as their deadlines were too short to risk the use of a new way to design for them.
Back in 2016, a Belgian office that was given the mission to create the facade of a quiet famous stadium contacted the University of Liège after having heard of Grasshopper.
The University of Liège then contacted the LNA (Laboratoire Numérique d’Architecture) where I was working as an teacher assistant, and I ended up on the project.
For contractual reasons, they gave me a poor 3D model, with which I was supposed to show how Grasshopper works and how they could use it for the facade of the Stadium. Let me insist on the fact that I was familiar with Grasshopper for less that an year at that point…
First things first, I started by making that (light) 3D useful by sorting every piece of geometry, and flipping some of them with a home made script.
I was then able to work on all of the future panels, or any specific one. As I wasn't given any information on the facade and was preparing a presentation, I wanted to show as much variation as possible. Continuing on, I started showing how we could build structures even from that basic 3D, live during the presentation. This isn’t a proper structure, take it as a showcase for people who didn’t know anything about Grasshopper.
The project sadly ended up prematurely because of deadlines reasons and their inability to hire me as I was still a student. Even though I was clearly not ready for a work like this with my Grasshopper skills at that time, it was a really aspiring experience to me, and I kept learning since.
